In a Featured Scholar Interview (virtual) prepared by Chemical Synthesis (https://www.oaepublish.com/cs), Prof. Dr. Juan Carlos Colmenares Quintero presents a bold vision for transforming waste into clean energy and valuable chemicals.
Prof. Colmenares leads the CatSEE research group at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences. His team combines sunlight, ultrasound, heat and mechanical energy with advanced catalysts and continuous-flow reactors. The objective is to convert lignin, biomass and other organic wastes into hydrogen, hydrogen peroxide, fine chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates under mild conditions.
The interview also examines metal-free carbon catalysts, copper single atoms, defect-engineered carbon nitride, piezocatalysis, and mechanoredox chemistry. Prof. Colmenares explains how his postdoctoral work with late Nobel Laureate Professor George A. Olah (https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/chemistry/1994/olah/facts/) shaped his understanding of carbon as a resource rather than simply an emission or waste product.
However, he delivers a clear warning: adding more energy fields does not automatically create greener chemistry. New technologies must prove their energy efficiency, durability, scalability and performance with genuine waste streams.
His ultimate goal is a self-cleaning, continuous-flow reactor capable of converting real organic waste into real economic and environmental value.
“Waste is not the end,” Prof. Colmenares emphasizes.“It is the beginning.”.
